Crash during the first level

Just as the friendly tanks arrive at the end of the first level the game will just freeze and crash with a very strange screen contrast bug forcing me to restart the computer. This also happens in compatibility mode and running it as administrator.

So this is late but it's because of a specific setting, in my case at least: World Dynamic Light Quality under the "performance" tab. If you turn that to its minimum setting the freezing/crash should stop! You can turn it back on afterwards.
