^ this. I was about to beat eternal polaris for the first time but they went a different direction to me and I got a draw. At the very least give us a big flashing arrow on screen to indicate which way to go to keep racing the current rival.

Ah yes, this oversight has been in the series since TXR 3; whenever you take another route and the AI doesn't adhere, you get a draw. I hope Genki read this and at least fix this somehow.

If you're hovering your chosen side early enough the AI will follow you. No last minute decisions.

There is no predetermined route.

Well IMO if the Rival doesn't follow you they should lose. I didn't break for a side last minute, I went as early as I could to the right, but the rival didn't follow me, so what you say doesn't match my experience.
I've tested this several more times, going one direction as early as possible, no last minute changes and its 50/50 if the rival follows you or not.

Maybe in past games they follow you if theres enough time, but its not how its working right now.
In Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2 on the Dreamcast the rival would try to follow you if you were ahead. Of course with last second direction changes, it was not always able to follow you and it would end in a draw. It was actually a part of my tactic against some rivals, because handling in TXR:2 is very understeery, so some bosses needed to be won by top speed.
This meant getting ahead on the C1, win in the more straight streches outside of the C1 loop.
Hopefully they tweak it to be more like this.
It's particularly annoying when you're farming for credits and a draw ruins your winning streak bonus. I was racing White Revolution for an 11th win, over 100 meters a head, and they just went for another ramp instead of following me...

If you don't take another route while having an obvious distance advantage I think a draw is pretty fair. Never had those happen, as it's obvious you shouldn't just go left when the rival beside you obviously goes right.

It does, the rivals have predetermined routes they follow, but if they are less than 30yds behind you they will continue to follow you despite their route, I literally did this a second ago.
