I spent forever farming as well, and here is how I eventually beat it (approximately, I forgot my exact set-up): Curry+Radiotoxic bomb on a Gonta (or on as many Gontas as you can afford to equip, if you put those upgrades on multiple Gontas be sure to spread them out enough that they don't kill each other). Just run forward and blow up, you should kill ~3-4 cats, if you don't you'd might as well reload, reposition, and try again. I can't remember what I used to clean up the rest, but if you manage to get them in a good position, you shouldn't need much more to clean up the rest, maybe 1 more super upgrade Gonta and a couple more with at least some speed upgrades, or some assaults with some speed upgrades.
Edit: Oh, haha, you're the same guy that I was telling about farming for that mission last time. Well then, I'll give my farming strategy too (it's pretty expensive though, I think I spent too much money trying to farm faster rather than building the things I actually needed) I Farmed Mine-Yahata Base by putting +3 target area and +3 range on 3 Nozomi Assaults (+2 if you can't afford +3), and you basically have each one of them wipe out one third of the map, hopefully getting the wipeout bonus rather than killing all the command tanks. Also, there is a recon unit that hides in the far upper left tile that can be a bit tricky to hit unless you have +3 target area and range, it has ruined my wipeout bonus many times.
I can't afford to get the +3s yet but I manage to get 106k per battle due to the speed bonus. What episode is Yahata Base? The money is probably better there. D:

What map is that?
Also, what do you mean by making mid-battle saves?
I assume I can't access that map until I beat the game?
Do you just access it through the free battle menu?
thanks for the useful info

I wonder if beating the game without taking the detour will unlock the new maps (if I reload a pre-finished save).
