Even people who enjoy other japanese horror barely know it.
I do love siren and gravity rush but except silent hill i think thoses two are very niche game.
edit : some steam reviews are in but they all feel useless and most of it are under an hour...
and?
Anyway, all reviews under an hour is pure bs/sus to me, unless it's a broken launch.
Nobody is going to write a review after only having played a few hours, it is of no use to me to read a review from someone who has only played for an hour.
Silent Hill fan here. Little to nobody knows about Toyama. Everyone praises the second installment aside from music. So yeah that's pretty niche.
Akira's music is niche as well. I listen to it almost for two decades and I can't recall more than one guy from my friends who knows Yamaoka.
I won't say it's had no marketing, but it hasn't had a lot of marketing. I've talked to quite a few people that play games who have never heard of it even days before release. Unless you watched the Game Awards a couple years ago, you probably never saw this.
The Metacritic scores are middling at best (PC = 65, Xbox = 67, PS5 = 62). Some complaints have been clunky combat among other things, which for many means an automatic no.
I don't think it's that expensive personally, $45 doesn't seem like a lot. However several people are arguing that that is too expensive for some reason.
So there's a lot of factors as to why there aren't that many reviews, and why there aren't that many people playing.
