Slitterhead is an uncompromising horror game with a strange yet engaging narrative, lovingly complemented by hack & slash, psychological, and survival horror elements. It’s been a long time since I’ve played a game with such unapologetic originality. Developed by Bokeh Game Studio, founded by Keiichiro Toyama, the director of Silent Hill and Siren, and alongside Toyama, Jirō Ishii, the scenario writer for Siren, it’s unsurprising yet refreshing to see an instant cult classic emerge from this studio. On top of that, with music composed by Akira Yamaoka, this was an instant sell for me.

During the first 8-10 hours of Slitterhead, I was absolutely hooked. While the combat might be considered janky by today’s standards, I found it to be rewarding and challenging enough that I didn’t feel the urge to toss my PC out the nearest window. The gameplay loop, as noted in other reviews, can get potentially tedious due to its repetitive nature. If you're considering this game, I would definitely recommend picking it up—there’s genuinely nothing comparable.

I have a great time with this game, it's daring, and created with a passion. Toyama's direction and Yamaoka's music mix great, once more.

The former brings a likable cast of characters, time travel shenanigans, interesting horror concept, and great choice for a setting - it's Kowlong (based on late Kowloon, Hong-Kong), it's neon-lit and filthy, it's 1990's, and everybody smokes.

The latter composed a plenty of instantly memorable acapella songs. That city map menu music will stay with you for a while.

Although it's rather apparent that Bokeh team had some issues with meeting their ambition with available resources, the result is still admirable. Combat and atmosphere are strong, even if mission design flaws and repetitiveness are also on display.

Guys cooked a delicious game for a player who watches their diet. They do deserve a tip.

It can get repetitive in the later half of the game play but the idea of exploring different sections of the same map is kinda fun. A reminiscent of the traditional japan-made action games from the PS2 era. Recommended only at discount though.
