First, i should explain two types of firing mechenisms to you, open and closed bolt operation. First, and how the majority of firearms are designed to be a "closed bolt" firing weapon, such as the M16 or AK47. These weapons chamber a round and lock-closed (i.e. "in battery"). You pull the trigger and the firing process is initiated while the weapon is in battery. The firing process begins from the closed bolt.
Conversly we have "open-bolt" firing weapons. Many machine guns are designed this way so as to aid cooling of the weapon and also prevent "cook offs" during high-tempo firing.
The bolt is actually locked to the rear and the firing sequence is initiated from there. The trigger is pulled, the bolt moves forward, feeds a cartridge, locks into batter and the firing pin strikes the primer. the cycle of operations begins from the open bolt.
What they both have in common is that the weapons bolt must always be locked into the barrel/reciever/etc. If not, 55,000 PSI is not contained and will usually result in destruction of the weapon (seen a .50 cal go out of battery, was not pretty. blew the reciever, a soldier had to be medevaced out)
In this game, the design of the .50 is not feeding the round into the barrel and firing from the locked position. i think its actually firing the round on the bolt face while the bolt is mid-way in the reciever. BOOM. haha
