Master of Shield

I traveled to Bravil to seek Andragil to help me work on Master of Shield. The problem comes in not being able to hold a weapon in my right hand so that I can hold the shield in the left. If I don't equip a weapon then I can't equip the shield. She wants to wail on me with a war hammer to test my metal. When I can't hold up the shield she ends the session. I can't be the first player to encounter this am I? Does anyone have an answer? Thanks, Ed
