used to be you would just get bombarded with messages find you out in the middle of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ nowhere telling you that you have just gained ownership over a bunch of new properties

you "unlock" them instantly, technically, but you have to actually explore to get to them, rather than a "go here" spam after load screen

They are apparently more integrated into the world now. Rumors from npcs and the like. I never played the original, so I dont even know whats a dlc and whats not. So I'd say it was done pretty well. :D

Keep playing and checking things out, you will run into them.

You need to either ask for rumors or go directly on DLC location to unlock it.
No more, no less.
They removed the message pop up and trigger exiting sewers to not overwhelm new players.
