no, it's not the desktop going black, it must be the game exe still running, normally it shoud close within 1 minutes, otherwise, always keep a task manager opened with the option ' always visible' enabled, then when quit the game alt-tab untill you bring the task manager and manually end the oblivion.exe.

Not sure about the desktop issue but I'm pretty sure you deleted your saves. I did the same thing when I was trying to recompile shaders but thankfully the deleted folder was still in my recycle bin so I just restored it and salvaged my saves. Check your recycle bin and see if the folder is still in there, and if it is just restore it.

You mean after you deleted the quote save game directory, don't you. You only needed to remove one file not you saves.
