Oblivion is Classist
A Mage is Punished for using Armour, but isn't given access to Gloves, Matching Hoods (Limited to Red Hood or Mythic Dawn), and either a Robe with no pants (Greaves or Linen) or just wearing Regular Clothes. (I'm unsure if those can be Enchanted, but I may try those the next time I'm home. But in either case... All other classes have tons of options, whereas the Caster Class has 2 choices; Be punished for using armour... or be Limited by Using Cloth. And Robes... since you can't use Pants, should be allowed 2 Enchantments.

And don't get me started on how Plain and Ordinary the Robes are... Soooo Boring :(.

Note: This is NOT a Real Gripe... I just wanted some Whine with my Cheese ;D

You aren't given pants because that's where the real magic happens.
There’s a criminal lack of head gear in this game. I want a pointy wizard hat dammit!

clothing can be enchanted.

Mages having penalties for wearing armor isn't anything new, but in Oblivion at least, a higher level Armor skill reduces those penalties.
@Robilar..... RoFL.... :)
@Super.... Yes!!! Like Gandolf the White... that was a Proper Hat!!!
@Cryptic... Actually that's good to hear. There is actually this one Burgandy outfit I was thinking of using which 'May' look good with the Red Hood or even the Mythic Dawn Hood. But I'll still be Out-of-Luck regarding the Hands (No Gloves) unless I take the 2 or 3% penalty for Light Armour.
@Crystal... I know, it's even like that with Skyrim. However... there a lot more choices for Mage outfits; Along with Gloves. Even some Magical Armour which a Magw can wear. But here... there's only punishments ;(.

You can put any enchantment on any normal set of clothes, but only one enchantment per piece, so make it count. I think Skyrim let you put 2 per piece if you are good at it. Also, for hands, if you kept those weightless wrist irons from the beginning, those work.

Really though, if you make your own spells and include elemental/magic weaknesses in them right, you really don't need to sweat the armor penalties.
It's not very aesthetically pleasing but if for some reason you've kept the shackles you spawned with at the very beginning of the game you can enchant them and use them as a substitute for gloves, as they're considered clothing.
AAaarrrrgggghhhhhh!!!! I kept those shackles for a while... a Remembrance kind of thing. But got rid of them once I started wearing Armour. I 'May' have kept them, but I'll have to look for where I put them.

But don't get me wrong... this isn't really even an issue... just an Aesthetic Whine. The fact is, I've been running with Full Mithril Armour with Shield for quite some time, and only a 9% Penalty on a Normal Difficulty Game. It's literally a Non-Issue.

But still... Magi should have the same (or Equivalent) gear; if for no other reason... it Looks Cool :)

You can get 2 more shackles in the jail from the Mehrunes Razor quest line.
Matching hoods? I may be missing your point here as I have found a number of different colored hoods and robe combinations (but yes, the styles are limited).

I like the sound of that; and No, you're not missing the point. I guess I just haven't found them yet. Thus far I've only found 2 Matching Hood and Robes (Red Silk Hood & Robe and Mythic Dawn). As well, passed that... I haven't found any other Hoods. I have found a number of Mage Robes, but again, No Hoods.
Hoods: The staves merchant in the market sells hoods. There's one lying around in the Anvil Mage's Guild. Some necromancers wear black hoods. When you do the quest in the shrine of the Mythic Dawn you can find lots more hoods. There is also a mod which spawns (ugly:) mage's gloves.
No Mods... Too Soon for that. But the Rest... Great Information; thanx Mate. I'm actually in Imperial City right now. I've checked out the Staves, but never thought to check his Armour.

Good Looking Out Mate.

consider becoming a spellsword instead

Mages can cast 75% shields. They can create a set of fully chameleon armor using the enchanting station at the arcane university. They can create weakness to element spells and melt through enemies far faster than hacking and slashing with a weapon would ever do. They can be walking Invincible by enchanting shield on a set of clothing. I would say they're far more powerful than the physical damage characters regardless.

Having to refill enchanted weapons is about as annoying as having to repair armor every two battles on Expert and master difficulty I'll take the clothing on my mage.

Casting buff spells for Magic and willpower is less annoying and the Magic regeneration is crazy fast with a willpower above 200.
