Crashes every time I try to enter the Great Oblivion Gate

So I'm playing the main quest and about the enter the Great Oblivion Gate that just spawned outside Bruma. Problem is every time I try to enter the gate the game just suddenly crashes to desktop making it impossible to progress any further. Isn't it lovely?

Anyone else had any issues with this? Would lowering the graphical settings even do anything? The FPS is fairly low from all the NPC's during the battle.
