I agree, for me, locking picking in the remaster artificially feels worse than the original but I played the original like.... 15+ years ago now lol.
press w, if you see that the lock is falling fast then give up and try another lock,
press w and if you see the lock is falling slowly then press w 3 times fast so that the lock doesn't fall completely, the third time press the space bar when the lock is on the top to confirm.
if you see a lock is falling fast, don't try, move left or right then come back and try again until you see it's in its "slow" cycle.
to resume pull the lock 3 times only when it is in its slow cycle, pretty fast, without letting it fall completely, then confirm at the third attempt.
if the lock is moving/falling fast, move the cursor left or right and retry, untill you see the lock is in its "slow" cycle.
you'll never break a lockpicks even on very hard. 3 fast pulls on slow cycle locks is the key.
Pfttt, easier than fighting a mud crab?

This. Also remember to let it fall all the way down if it is moving fast. This lets it change speeds the next time. As long as it is bounced up again before it falls all the way down, it will stay the same speed. You do this when you see it moving slowly and then lock it in when you have the timing down.
edit: nvm... video is probably easier to get.
