My advice for new players
Soon as you exit the sewers, go to the Arena and join it and finish it. That's an easy 5,000 gold and plus you'll get XP on your major skills and level up once or twice depending on your difficulty. Thats where I always start. And then after that what ever your skills are like for me one of my characters is a mage, I started the mages guild after the arena. and my second character I'm a thief/archer, I started the theives guild.

Good people of the Imperial City! Welcome to the arena! This next match pits 2 warriors in a advancement match to Gladiator! But enough talk, you came for a fight and a fight you shall have!

LOWER THE GATES!
Good advice. I also like to do stuff tailored around the role of my characters.

Glad to see this wasn’t a bug or exploitation. Those have their place when you want to mess around, but I wouldn’t recommend any for a first play through.

This won't work unless you're playing adept or lower. I barely survived the first fight at level 10 on expert.
You can farm Minotaur Lords in the Arena for Grand Souls later on when you get into enchanting.
I always join the cllollages then do arena on the way to the big collage lol

This isn't an advice, is pretty much saving the trouble of doing it later.
Anyone in sane conscience will complete the arena as early as possible for not being rekted by the almost impossible to kill bare handed Argonians slaves while wearing full heavy armor due to how the level scaling and enemy stats in this game works,

Reflect damage does wonders on your gear
But do the grey prince/grand champions personal quest BEFOR you complete the arena.
