How does Detect Life work?

I picked up the Fin Gleam, and used a mod to disable the dreadful Night Eye. It's good for water breathing, of course, but so far I haven't really noticed anything to tell me that the Detect Life on it is working. What does it do visually to help me detect life around me?

It looks like purpley sparkles around stuff. Best way i can think to describe it.

It’s more pink sparkles to my eyes. Could be my color settings though.

I think it makes pink or purple aura around living stuff?

That's it? Does it show through walls, or show enemies at great distances? So far I haven't noticed anyone surrounded in sparkles.

it should, it depends on the distance of the spell if the effect is only 5ft then you wont see anyone till your right up on them

Yes, it shows through anything. The range depends on the spell magnitude. It should tell you if you examine the item in your inventory.

Detect Life is now borderline useless
just use your compass.
