spellmaking - do i still have to buy higher rank spells?
I just wondering today that if I can just make new spells according to my higher skill ranks or increased magicka pool, does that mean I don't have to buy higher rank spells anymore? Because I can just make new ones myself at the spell making station? Or am I missing something?

yes :)
If you can cast the lower version of the spell, say a fireball, then yes you can just go craft another fireball spell that does more. Crafting the spells does cost gold and depending on magnitude, range, and duration the spell will go up in level requirements and mana cost.
Purchasing any spell type, unlocks that type for crafting/enchanting.
Further spells of the same type aren't necessary, but keep an eye out for spells effects you don't have.
Also you need the skill to to cast the spell in order to use its effects on a crafted version/enchantment.

Also of note is not all crafted spells are better than purchased ones.
Like feather, at max skill the highest magnitude is 100. But I bought one with 150.

Me too, but I don’t like to admit it :yella_excited:

Ok this is interesting. So the master level spell Beast of Burden gives you 250 feather, according to UESP.

Are you saying that since the max magnitude for spell making is only 100, you can never make a feather spell as good as Beast of Burden?

That's correct, but you can enchant Feather onto multiple items, which stack.

Theoretically, you could make the duration longer to compensate too, right?

Duration doesn't apply to enchantments, only spells, but extending the duration in a spell doesn't increase the amount you can carry, just for how long.

I was only talking about spells. If the max magnitude is 100, you could crank up the duration with the leftover points. That's what I was saying.
