Bugthesda disabling REQUIRED console commands now...
So as many know, any bethesda game, but especially oblivion has quests that will just break without you being able to do a thing. in the past you could just use SetStage if all else failed to force yourself past the failure. NOT ANYMORE! in their absolute brilliant stupidity, SetStage has been disabled meaning that you get caught by a bugged quest, your just screwed if the other workarounds decide they dont want to work...

"Here's how to re-enable the setstage command:

Open the ini file: Locate the OblivionRemastered\\Content\\Dev\\ObvData directory.

Add a new line: Add the line Altar.Cheat.AllowSetStage=1 to the bottom of the [Altar] section.
Enable the command in-game: Open the console (~) and type Altar.Cheat.AllowSetStage true.
Now you can use the setstage command: For example, setstage MS08 90 to advance quest MS08 to stage 90."

So far i found 4 game breaking bugs. 1 in base game, that quest in Bravil involving an axe and an orc manage to bypass the bugs by just killing everyone ending the quest prematurely.

3 in shivering isle and manage to find solution without using set stage.

If I really have to i guess i will install that enable achievement mod.

you must either be lucky or you havent done one of the numerous quests where the triggers are easily broken by just normally playing. and those quests usually cant be completed by "killing everyone." you know them when you look at the wiki and there are 5+ workarounds that are all maybe will fix. and usually you only discover you broke the trigger after its too late to reload before the break. they are usually the heavy scripting quests where order and timing matters, but they arent properly done to handle bad order and timing.

and these were things that broke all the way back in 06 and didnt get fixed.
Not exactly normally playing. That stupid quest forced me to get infamy points and I have to re do the whole knight of the nine pilgrimage again. That quest is heavily scripted.

As for the other 3 at shivering isle.
- 1 is happened during the first quest in shiv isle a better trap is what it is called i think. A common bug where one of the trio adventure just stuck in place going back and forth causing endless loop and the quest refuse to advance. Since you cant kill or attack them there is not much i can do. Not sure how many time I reload until suddenly it is gone by itself at least i reload more than 10 times doing different things each times such as attacking that essential npc or cast summon etc.
- second one is when i need to find duchess of dementia, her attendant told me she is busy lately and if I wait she will eventually appear. She is behind an unpickable door. Except she never did and I waited two full weeks with 1 hr increment, 3 hr increment nothing. She never comes out. Reset the tile also same. Reload or restarting the quest is the same. One of a very old gamefaqs board said I should try restart the game completely reload the tiles and voila she just appear.
- third there is a bell that you need to ring to break that crystal wall when knight of order invade, should be straight forward except in my case it does nothing. But for this one reloading the whole quest solve it but i need to redo the whole dungeon.

Obvdata is a folder, not a file. Once the obvdata folder is open there is another folder and three files. Which do I pick?

I do believe, you'll open the Oblivion.ini file in that ObvData folder, then scroll to the bottom of that where [Altar] is or just ctrl + f and search for altar, then add that line above to that section:

"Add a new line: Add the line Altar.Cheat.AllowSetStage=1 to the bottom of the [Altar] section."

I ditched my 1st char and started anew using UORP
https://www.nexusmods.com/oblivionremastered/mods/477
Just as with any Bethesda game it's just better playing with the community fixes.
I thought I read if you use console commands you risk breaking achievements?

I followed the directions. I searched for and found the Oblivion.ini file and opened it with notepad. I scrolled to the very bottom of the file where the Altar section is and added the line "Altar.Cheat.AllowSetStage=1" (without the quotabtion marks) to the bottom of the Altar section, then saved the file. The next time I was in the game, I opened the console and typed the line Altar.Cheat.AllowSetStage true to enable the function in the game. It worked a treat!

My only question is, will I have to enable the function in game every time I need to use the SetStage function? If so, it's no big deal. I guess I'll find out the next time I have to use the function to advance a bugged quest.
Knights of the Nine broke at the pilgrimage of the shrines after obtaining the "pilgrims grace" or whatever it's called. Never got the vision to progress.
You can actually set that variable in the console, by the way.

Some things that you can still do have changed name because the UE/Gamebryo bridge has the new namespace where console commands (and ini settings) for gamebryo live, but if you watch the screen while you are typing your command into the console it will usually tell you the new command if it exists. It should do this when you start typing setstage BTW.

Some things have been entirely removed or reimplemented for UE (and renamed) of course, but a lot of it's still there.
