Why would you use a barrel when you can use the chest. oof
This happened to me too I was storing stuff in a chest in the fighters guild in anvil and bam all the stuff was gone a few days in game later, very sad day.
That's a shame. In other news...
Don't store stuff in a random shed, At this point it on you.
That's because it's an "Abandoned Shack", and you left all your loot in it for 4 days. Some Skooma Tweaker, probably came in there with one o' them "Kitty Ladies" and had a "Wild and Crazy"time.. then they opened the barrel to drop a MEATLOAF but instead found your Loot stash... in an "ABANDONED SHACK" DOWN BY THE RIVER.

This was the case in the original version too. If you store your ♥♥♥♥ in a container you don't own, it gets overwritten when the container gets refreshed.

Abandonned shack is a fancy name for skooma den/Homeless house.

Why would you think any place that isnt a player home, would be a safe place to store stuff?
This is basically the equivalent of saying... I saved all my money up for 4 months, and I stashed it the bathroom cabinet of a local crack house.

When I went back four days later...... it was gone.:steamfacepalm:
get owned
you need to buy/get your own house and then buy the "storage" furniture in order to get your own chests in that house, those chests will keep your stuff.

nb : i throw a lot of armors, ingredients , books on the floor outside of an abandonned house, at level 5, now level 30 and they are still there.

FYI: the hollow stump behind the staff store in the Market District of the Imperial City is safe to store items in until you get a player house.

this is why I only use actual house chests like dunbarrow 😩
Should've bought the house .

You don't even need it now because you got all the DLC stuff like castle.
