I think they'll probably bring it back for TES6 but it will be in some less annoying way and will be connected to other stuff such as smithing to make it worthwhile to have
Fallout 3 came after this game, at least in Fallout 3 they refined it and made it more manageable. You would find an item the same as yours and could use it to fix your own item, you could get a perk allowing you to use similar type of items to also then fix it
Here is just the prototype version of it where they were experimenting with the idea of durability
If they do add it back in TES6 I hope it is more manageable and tied to smithing to actively encourage you to make use of the smithing mechanics, also instead of items just breaking they actually show damage on them such as chipped swords and broken/torn armour and if they make another Fallout game I hope they swap the durability system to systems like those of Tarkov where you gun doesn't just say "Hey I'm not going to work anymore and you can't re-equip me" but is just a chance for the gun to jam needing cleared
Trust me, at first i thought it was going to be annoying, but please take the time to level it, because you will seriously face some issues otherwise later on. If you really need to, set your armorer skill to 100 through console commands if you don't care about achievements.
At some point your gear will be fully enchanted and if you don't have your armorer skill leveled you will NOT be able to repair it even if you have the hammers. At that point, only a blacksmith will be able to touch them up for quite a bit of gold.
This means if your gear breaks down during a dungeon run or a longer quest with a ton of fights, you are going to have a very bad time.
