are two handed weapons really that bad?
I’ve been wanting to do a two handed weapons build but a lot of reviews and comments I’ve read say they are bad. So what’s the deal?

Without mods. Yes.

If the ai uses them against you, then yeah they're totally devastating. Which is infuriating.
From what I piece together, going back and forth from 2 hand to 1 hand and shield, there is just a long delay between swings... yes they're heavier weapons but the delay never used to be that long and trying to block immediately in dire situations, it's just really wonky. I probably take triple the amount of damage using a 2 hand, even with blocking / dodging, than I do with your basic Sword & Board style fighting, which barely makes any sense ya know, lol.
It's more like they're "okay" but with the way the game is designed they're just not the best. Their swing speed and the damage they do doesn't outweigh how much faster one-handed weapons are, and if those weapons are enchanted the amount of damage they can do grows exponentially higher while still allowing you to use a shield in the off-hand.
I use a claymore and there's a significant difference just from switching to long sword for an encounter. I really like the spacing combat claymores provide, but they're definitely worse.

Just go all in on Destruction.
The biggest drawback IMO is the lack of defense.

If you're going sword and board...magical shields can give bonuses in addition to your one-hander, which is something you will also miss out on.
It's not that 2h weapons are bad. It's just that the alternatives are better. If you compare the stats between a 1h longsword and a 2h sword the damage dealt is usually only 2 or 3 difference. When using just a 1h weapon you can then equip a shield or spell in your off hand which you can't do if you're using a 2h weapon.
spell in your offhand? lol wrong game buddy... but yeah, one handed weapons tend to just be overall faster to the point any 'loss' in damage is still higher dps overall... sad, but true...

I dunno, for one they really have much of a range advantage, and for another enemies are all lightening fast and can literally get point blank with you and stay there the entire encounter if they want. Two handers don't have an interrupt or knockback or anything that can keep them at range, unless of course, you get up in the super high levels of the skill, which isn't easy to survive that long using them.

Not as bad as the CTD's.
In my experience, yes. Ebony longsword doing 16 damage, and ebony greatsword doing 17. Greatsword takes twice as long to swing, between attacks, if not longer. So its pretty much the same damage, at half the rate. Add to that the fact that you can use a shield with 1 handers. So using 2 handed yields you half the dps, and less defense.
It's not Skyrim, is the issue. Claymore compared to a Longsword is a trivial, less than 10% more damage per hit, but much slower swinging, ergo, lower damage per second. The only advantage is reach, with a Claymore you can "kite" (run backwards while swinging) enemies, staying just barely out of your enemy's reach.

Skyrim, dual wielding two swords is technically muh top meta DPS, but Two-Handed weapons do double the damage per hit of equivalent One Handed weapon, with more reach, and slightly slower swing speed. Two-Handed in Skyrim is very, very viable; I can one to two shot almost anything in the entire game with a battleaxe. Two handed weapons in Oblivion have no respectable damage advantage at all per hit and is actually a large loss in DPS compared to a equivalent one handed weapon, and marginal gain in reach is honestly trivial.

I'm a Two-Handed master in Skyrim, but Oblivion is absolutely sword-and-board supremacy without mods.

You can mod them, two handed weapons but that will likely quadruple the amount of crashes. Not getting crashes? give it some time.....
Damn. I hope they address this issue and make two handed weapons more viable. Seems like a few simple tweaks would make them as effective as they should be.
I just bought the akavari warblade and I will say it is absolutely worth the money. I can kill most things I've ran into in 3-4 hits.
They shortened the reach of all weapons in the remaster.. So the only advantage of twohanders was lost really. Even without the shield, one handers are better now. There are several mods that fix this though.
