Oblivion Was Never That Good – This Remaster Proves It 💩
It’s still built on the same ancient Gamebryo/Creation engine that’s been a janky mess since 2002 no amount of texture polish hides the rot underneath. Bethesda games have always shipped buggy, half-finished, and only survive thanks to modders fixing what the devs don’t. The physics are still tied to framerate, the animations look robotic, and the AI behaves like it’s trapped in a 2006 tech demo. The infamously bad level scaling is untouched, so yes, bandits in Daedric armor are still a thing. Bethesda has clearly done the bare minimum here, counting on nostalgia to cover for a lack of real modernization. Meanwhile, fan projects like Skyblivion show more ambition and technical competence than this overpriced reskin. Performance issues even on high-end PCs prove they haven’t learned a thing from Skyrim or Fallout 76. Other remasters (Mass Effect, Witcher 3, Demon’s Souls) actually fix flaws this one just preserves them in higher resolution. If you strip away the community mods, Bethesda games are shallow, buggy, and overrated. I’m not paying AAA prices to beta test another nostalgia-fueled cash grab.

I think this is the answer here. The AAA video game industry is so starved of actual quality that we crave mediocrity, especially if it looks pretty.

As a Morrowind veteran who has beaten Oblivion inside out when it first came out in 2006, I can verify that OP is pretty much right: the story is much weaker than Morrowind's and the gameplay is much weaker than Skyrim's. The game's (at the time) excellent open-world graphics and modding community is what kept Oblivion from falling into obscurity as some generic fantasy game that tried to ape way too much off Peter Jackson's LotR trilogy.

Honestly, I used to think that was the prevailing opinion on Oblivion, that it was the black sheep of the franchise. It's blowing my mind how much everyone is praising TES IV and it's shiny unreal engine wrapper, I feel like I've been Mandela effect'ed.

quite the opposite, the remaster proves how good it was, and now it's even better

Remastered = same game but for modern hardware (it being the same game is the entire point). Remake = fresh game inspired by the old.

As should be obvious to anybody, this is not a remake, and it should be as faithful as possible including the unique charm it had when it came out. That doesn't mean you have to like it, but don't be surprised if it feels the same - that's the point.

It would probably be even more with Morrowind.

i would hope so.
im willing to pay upwards of $149.99 for a morrowind remaster.
Hard disagree. Haven't played it since Skyrim released. Oblivion still slaps hard.

After I got my settings dialed in, I immediately sank 5 hours.

I mean as if right now its well over 100k players on at the same time...not many games on here clear that 100k number nor do they maintain it days later. It had 217k peak, vs dragon age the veil-guards 90k peak...it also beats avowed at 19k peak...I am sure if I go game by game in my massive library it would hold its own. Does it hold a candle to something like Baldur's gate 3?! NO, but its far from a turd.

Even if it was 100% on gamepass, people are choosing to spend their time playing.

As you advance through your teenage years, you will learn how important that is.... hopefully ;)
