Not much worth actually stealing?
So I started a thief character, one of my favorites from the old days and am wanting to start stealing and making money that way but I'm finding that there is hardly anything worth stealing even from shops.

Some like the jewelry store in the imperial city had a decent haul but that was about it, most I can really haul the seems worth it is alchemy equipment and maybe pick pocketing the owners for about 50 gold but that is very risky even at my high sneak skill level.

I don't remember it being this hard to find anything worth stealing, any tips on finding stuff worth stealing?

Mages guild usually has tons of soul gems just asking to be pilfered.
I understand completely. I am playing a thief right now working my way through the guild quests. Even going into the buildings of the rich Imperials seemed pointless. What I did was install a mod from Nexus that increases the value of Miscellaneous items. Now, things like the silver dinnerware are worth 20-75 gold. It made things far more immersive for me, giving me a true reason to go in there and get items that would technically be found valuable among the elite of the world.

Go to the different cities and break into the counts private quarters, they tend to have jewel boxes and the sort you can pilfer around, if they count has a wife or is a woman.

Or if you're nuts, break into the imperial palace.

there's plenty to steal, just takes some consideration. often times, locked display cases have ceremonial gear which is basically worthless to use (it degrades crazy fast!) but still has decent value... staffs and enchanted weapons are valuable af if you can nick em. soul gems are VERY good because they are valuable and light weight... that's just a couple examples~

Exactly. like why are these silverware items so worthless? Might have to do what you did.

yeah it's weird, a lot of things that sound like they should be worth money just... aren't
and the weapons / armor you get later (level 15+) sell for a LOT of gold to the point that thievery as a means to financially support yourself seems a bit of a meme.

I can't remember if it was always like this back in the day or not - but i didn't really level much back in the day, due to the game being easier at level 1 - so i suspect I just have a bad memory because as a level 1, the stuff sells decent, but at level 20, you'll make 10k just clearing a random mine of glass / dwarf armored bandits.

quality of loot is determined by your level

I know that but I find it strange how merchants don't have a chest with the gear they sell, or even a coin vault or something for me to actually profit a little from, like what is the point of stealing from peoples houses if all they have are clothes and silver pots worth 3 gold.

The items with a low level enchantment seem the best way to build up gold. Most stores also have one or two enchanted items in the inventory that you might have to poke around to find. There are also a few random chests spread out that might surprise you with what they have in them. Any key you can get from pick pocketing is nearly always worthwhile if you can find the right door for it.
i can't remember what i stole but i do remember spending a ton of hours doing it.
I honestly feel like the clothing items should be worth more. We're talking fashion for that particular world. The materials and outfits should be worth a lot more than a few gold considering the fact that a certain outfit makes you look rich or poor.

I mean I have a pair of gold-trimmed shoes but they're only worth a few coins? That's silly considering that most people wear leather soles with thin thong straps and call it good. Shoes, fine clothing, etc. are all luxuries and their prices should reflect that.

The mod I have is called Valuable Clutter and it adds what I think are reasonable values to the miscellaneous items. You're not going to get rich taking just one, but loading yourself down with an entire dining room set is worthwhile. I also like that the different dish sets have different values. It really paints a better picture of who's rich, who's getting by, and who's too poor to afford quality ware to eat out of. I do think some prices could stand to be tweaked, though. Luxury items like bottles of writing ink, or decorations, should have more value because they are luxuries.

Gold/silver dinnerware, high class clothing, and fine/exquisite clutter.
Individually it may not seem like much, but trust me; it adds up to a lot. You don't wanna be robbing shops - those places are working class. You wanna be robbing mansions, castles, and other lofty places. Steal from the rich.

Also light armor>heavy armor when it comes to value per weight. Arrows are also extremely valuable for their weight. Pay attention to certain ingredients as well.

You're looking for treasure chests of gold stashed somewhere in a shop when you should be looking for other things.

I see that but it also seems to want mods to change the weight of things.

My first target as well
The game has clear inspiration from the Thief games, so it helps to think... who has the money? Go there.
