Or if you're nuts, break into the imperial palace.
and the weapons / armor you get later (level 15+) sell for a LOT of gold to the point that thievery as a means to financially support yourself seems a bit of a meme.
I can't remember if it was always like this back in the day or not - but i didn't really level much back in the day, due to the game being easier at level 1 - so i suspect I just have a bad memory because as a level 1, the stuff sells decent, but at level 20, you'll make 10k just clearing a random mine of glass / dwarf armored bandits.
quality of loot is determined by your level
I mean I have a pair of gold-trimmed shoes but they're only worth a few coins? That's silly considering that most people wear leather soles with thin thong straps and call it good. Shoes, fine clothing, etc. are all luxuries and their prices should reflect that.
The mod I have is called Valuable Clutter and it adds what I think are reasonable values to the miscellaneous items. You're not going to get rich taking just one, but loading yourself down with an entire dining room set is worthwhile. I also like that the different dish sets have different values. It really paints a better picture of who's rich, who's getting by, and who's too poor to afford quality ware to eat out of. I do think some prices could stand to be tweaked, though. Luxury items like bottles of writing ink, or decorations, should have more value because they are luxuries.
Individually it may not seem like much, but trust me; it adds up to a lot. You don't wanna be robbing shops - those places are working class. You wanna be robbing mansions, castles, and other lofty places. Steal from the rich.
Also light armor>heavy armor when it comes to value per weight. Arrows are also extremely valuable for their weight. Pay attention to certain ingredients as well.
You're looking for treasure chests of gold stashed somewhere in a shop when you should be looking for other things.
My first target as well
The game has clear inspiration from the Thief games, so it helps to think... who has the money? Go there.
