You might just need glasses.
i can notice it now, but upon first playing i kept selecting the wrong things because i would think something above it was what was being selected when i was in say: the weapons or armor selection because of how the equipped items are actually "visibly equipped"
so if i had everything in the list equipped except two items, and those two items were right next to each other, you really wouldn't know unless you knew for sure it was the brighter one that was being selected - at that time i didn't know it was the brighter one and kept dropping the dark ones, i had to tell myself over and over to stop it because by reflex i thought the darker one would be what was selected.
it's really just so minimal, all it needs is an outline for the selected or literally just an arrow to one side.
and it can be different with different brightness settings as well.
it was like this in the original too but i feel with the brightness of this one it's actually worse.
I can 100% see issues with it if you have issues with your eyes. Barring that though, there is a pretty clear contrast. I fully support more games to have color-blind graphics options. I wish I could remember the game now but there was a game that was fully developed with red/green color-blindness in mind and it had a super dope art-style.
getting glasses won't help this issue lol, and other people who have perfect vision with no colorblindness still see the issue im speaking of, if you're selecting an item in say the alchemy list where nothing is equipped there is an obvious brighter color to the selection.
my issues not with seeing it, it's the fact that when im in a menu with only 2 items that i can select from right next to each other, for some reason my brain thinks the darker one was the selected one.
there is no visual indication of selection other than the brightness of the selected item, in the case of two items in a list it can confuse people, that's all.
Oh, well that just takes getting used to. I didn't realize that filled soul gems were turned to the left, at first. So I had to keep clicking details to figure out which soul gems were filled and which weren't.
this however lets me see a huge contrast in things that are just brown, which the menus are.
and even i can barely tell the difference if it's just two items in a list im selecting from. (as in i can see it's brighter but just being brighter doesn't mean somethings selected in most games)
i just had to remember it's the brighter one.

not including custom mods for gameplay and such but QOL things like this in this game should be done by the devs, that's kinda the whole reason a lot of people got it other than the graphical upgrades.
this is one of those things that is a very tiny issue that sure can be fixed with mods, but a QOL addition none the less that could take the devs literally seconds to alter and make better.
it would be nice is all.
How could it have been made better? It might be ableist of me as I have 20/15 vision with no color impairments but there seems to be a pretty clear contrast. The menu is a tan-ish color. Items that are equipped are highlighted in grey. The selected item is highlighted in white. I'm sure there is a color combination that could be better but most colors are going to ruin the aesthetic of the menus being scrolls.
True, probably could have been better. See if this works for you. I just installed it and its atleast a bit easier to see, for me atleast. Also easy to install.

Thanks Mortal_Kasi for pointing me in the right direction.
