Friendly suggestion: Avoid the main quest
I'm sure some will disagree, but I think Oblivion's strong point has always been the side quests and simply exploring the map and carving your own path. In that respect I think it's still one of the best--and still my personal favorite--open world game.

That being said, if you're new to the game, I highly recommend avoiding the main quest. Without spoiling too much, once you've completed a few of the main quests the world will slowly get polluted with dungeons that can do a lot to spoil the mood, atmosphere, and immersion of the world. Pretty much all you need to do to keep this from happening is to stay away from the city of Kvatch.

Take your time exploring and adventuring. Only when you get tired of that would I recommend moving on with the main quest. The best parts of Oblivion are off the beaten path.

I am still hopeful that someone will port Servant of the Dawn[www.nexusmods.com] over to the Remaster. That mod was about the only reason I bothered replaying the main quest in Oldblivion. Feels good to be bad.
