Avoiding gates spawning
If I never bring the amulet to jaufre, never talk to him, but close the kvatch gate and save martin so he waits in the encampment then I can continue adventuring without new gates opening, correct?

Isn't the Kvach gate the trigger?

Nope unfortunately.
I left the sewer and hung around the arena for a bit trying to avoid the main quest I went north from the city to Bruma and halfway there the sky went red and I found a gate all lit up in its flaming glory.

That's a bug, not intended.

Is it a change? I need to check the UESP but again... my memory fails me as it seems to be a trigger for those things.
Maybe I'm thinking of Skyrim and meeting at the North Tower.

Oblivion gates early is a bug. They should open after rescuing Martin.
If you've got open gates before Kvatch, it's bugged. I had the one on the Imperial Isle open before then, did a quick save/load, and it was gone.

As long as you don't take martin back to the priory they shouldn't spawn. i dropped of the amulet after saving kvatch and left martin in the camp no gates.
I have given the amulet to Jauffrey but have not closed the Kvatch gate. Travelled/explored quite a bit but still have not seen Oblivion gates anywhere.

they shouldnt spawn randomly until you close the kvatch one. if they are, its a bug.
Yeah. I have Oblivion gates opening before going to Kvatch. I'd figured it's a bug, but it doesn't bother me. They're not as annoying as the dragons from Skyrim.

lol, gates are the prime thing in this game, it defines oblivion. its in the name and title and intro.

They're also extremely boring and spawn even more obnoxious enemies on the side of roads to deal with.
