Who came up with this slop? (Unfriendly Competition quest)
So a group of merchants called the Society of Concerned Merchants have been illegally colluding with each other to fix their prices (see Antitrust laws), and they want me to go spy on and burglarize this poor wood elf named Thoronir for selling items below their fixes prices. Thoronir refuses to join their secret and illegal organization.

Yet, I'm not allowed to side with Thoronir? I can't report this group of thieving bastards to the guards?

Great game, Bethesda.

How about finishing the Quest before you post next time? You will see why you're wrong then.

No he is not wrong, although Thoronir is not exactly right either, for one certain reason you will see later if you finish the quest.
Show me where in the Empire of Cyrodiil it says they have antitrust laws.
I searched "thoronir antitrust" to see if anyone else posted exactly what I was thinking as soon as Jensine told me about her "Society of Concerned Merchants", THANK YOU, I'm not the only one.
While The Society of Concerned Merchants seems like an HOA from hell that's run by uber-Karens, the quest was kind of cool, and you can get a very bad-ass mace in the deal if you know where to look.

On the one hand, price fixing. On the other... spoilers.
Hahah, I felt the same way when I got this quest. Seemed like the guy was being bullied into joining their merchant cult. The way the quest ended was humorously messed up. Still, under the circumstances I don't think there would have been a way to help Thoronir stay independent.

Since this game has some parallels with Medieval Europe you may be surprised to know this has little to do with modern ideas such as Antitrust laws. In medieval Europe there were groups called guilds. Frequently they had a lockdown on trades and there was little recourse to being independent of them. They would do everything in their power to force you to work by their system or you would be forced out of your trade, This could apply to merchants as well.
