Oblivion straddles the middle ground between morrowind and Skyrim. Whatever oblivion does better than Skyrim, morrowind does better than oblivion, and whatever it does better than morrowind, Skyrim does better.
It's the jack of trades of elder scrolls, it excels at nothing and the games before and after doing everything else better. The end result is the most generic and milk toast elder scrolls, and the worst level scaling in RPG history because they tried to balance it like a MMO game.
All of that is incorrect, besides number of spells and spell crafting.
Seriously, you just have to "push button" for the Nine Divines to get their blessing in Skyrim, right?
Why are so many Skyrim fangurls so butthurt on these forums. I'm basking in the glory of finally having an actual RPG again.
I literally just had to sprint and grab the sigil stone for a gate. I mean seriously, there was no way to cheese that frost atronach. THAT is called depth on character build. I can't take on this frost monster, but I can sure outmaneuver him.
I kind of wish they would do a remake of Daggerfall in the Oblivion engine, but that wouldn't be much like Skyrim either. Just an entirely different quality to offer, the expansiveness of a fantasy world.
Is it really polished? Well, it is very apparent that Bethesda was experimenting with their radiant AI. It's pretty hilarious, and sometimes also surprisingly impressive. Combat is passable at best. But if you want to be an adventurer and explore, loot and sell - this is the game for sure.
I do like Skyrim, but I'm kind of over it. I am glad to get back into Oblivion again.
I prefer some aspects of the gameplay in Skyrim. Combat is just better objectively in Skyrim. But I only prefer it in the same kind of way I like driving an automatic more than I do a manual transmission car.
