Help with combat and build

So i'm doing the arena quest as level 6 with iron long sword as a spellsword class at difficulty Adept. I did little to no damage at all with melee but my magic is dealing chip damage, what am I doing wrong here? I leveled INT, STR, and wilpower, but i feel like I have no chance fighting without kiting and spamming magic attack, they deal very hefty damage. I know I can just go and find OP items early or doing exploit to reach level 100 mastery on certain stats but i just wanna RP it rn.

Major skills are: Athletic, blade, block, conjuration, destruction, restoration, and light armor

Are you sure you're on adept? adept is supposed to be 1x to 1x damage given/taken.
The difficulty settings in this game are broken. There's a mod that fixes it. With the mod I find Expert to be the most balanced.
Otherwise just go level up some more and get better gear.

Yes i'm on adept, enemies in open world or dungeons are nowhere near this hard. Somehow people in the arena are tanky as hell, only my magic seem to be doing damage.
