i rarely buy new games i always wait for a sale but this game was a day 1 buy for me and i got no regrets
i do love the original, it holds a lot of memories for me
For the most part it's the same game with better graphics but worse performance and a few more bugs.
The upside is that it automatically creates and sends a crash report, so there is a hope that someone will actually work on fixes and it isn't just a money grab until they can put out their next real game. If I see them creating updates and bug fixes, then I would buy it at that time.
Here's an example of a bug that wasn't in the original: The vendors have unlimited money. When you buy and sell from them their gold doesn't change, so if you want to sell everything that's fine -- you just have to stay under their gold cap on each trade. I really don't think it was meant to work that way, from what I vaguely recall.
The only thing that is the same is the story. People say that old mods will still work on the Remastered version, but if you heavily mod I would worry that it would become unstable very quickly. I really don't think it's the same game under the skin.
they also changed how third person works and honestly its the best in the series, the original oblivions third person was always so wonky and janky, even skyrims updated third person was something i rarely used but so far i've been playing the remaster exclusively in third person (just note that sprinting animations dont look that good)
i recommend hitting up youtube and checking out various videos and seeing if its worth the price to you or not

Buy it if you like body type 1 or 2, or go back and buy the older one where there is male and female, up to you.
Yes I remember the cap being lowered as you went through transactions with it eventually recovering to the cap as time went on. Now if the inn keeper has a 50 gold cap I can sell her all my potions I just have to break it into batches which is actually to my advantage as each transaction raises mercantile. Whether it is a bug or intentional I don't know but definitely a change from the original.
I don't own it on Steam (yet) but have been playing almost non-stop on gamepass. Only downside is the open world is less performant than OG Oblivion and Skyrim.
If you're a TES and Beth RPG fan that could enjoy playing through Oblivion again with everything renewed I would consider this a definite must play. The uplift makes it feel like what we saw when we first played it, but could not explain to younger gamers now because it looked so dated to them.
Also, playing a mage is much harder than playing a fighter. For weapons (fighters), the damage increases with your skill level. For a mage, it is static. Your low level spells will always be low level spells. You must upgrade your spell list as you progress, and since you basically do the same damage, just faster, before you run out of magicka, you become less effective against opponents as you level up (their hits and armor increase, but your net damage stays the same, or even decreases). Your only real hope is getting to the Arcane University as quickly as possible, so that you can start crafting spells that will actually work, and enchant gear to keep you alive (bigger mana pool or better armor). Forget doing the main quest... just make a beeline for the 7 cities to do the Mage Guild entrance quests.
That said, there are actually some changes made that I am enjoying. First i noticed was some extra character customization options, second was color-coding that npc disposition mini-game, third was the level system rework (not sure if i actually LIKE it, but its at least a bit more reasonable than the original system that had issues like rushing endurance to maximize health gains or trying to power grind specific skills to get the "efficient levelling" +5's. Now each level just gives you 12 points to distribute across your choice of 3 attributes regardless of which skills contributed to actually gaining that level, with luck costing 4 points for 1 level).
To the OP: If you liked OG Oblivion then this is a must have.
I think the changes that they made DO make it a better game, but stability rots so save often or you will lose progress. There are new bugs (maybe exploits). Also, I had an issue with Windows Security blocking the Saves folder (not at first, but for some reason kicked in) so I wasn't able to save the game for a while. I almost quit playing but thankfully I figured out how to add the game through the Folder firewall just before I gave up.
