cant progress in mage guild quests?
i just joined mage guild my first quest was to resuce some dude from a cave filled with zombies so i did and went back to mage build completed the quest and nothing happens after i waited for days kept talking to guild leader and i cant get new quest?

Did you talk to him about a promotion?
Usually it is like you do a quest -> Ask for a promotion -> Then get a new quest.
There are also some quests where you have to wait a day later on.

You only get one quest from each mages guild to begin with

When you return to the guild, you have to speak with the guy you rescued, then the guildmaster.

And as others point out, you get one recommendation task from each city's Mage's Guild, then you're on your way to the Arcane University in the Imperial City.

when i can get that dude as a companion? the only reason i did this quest i thought i could get him as companion

I also hope the guy who you were supposed to bring back is alive. Did he go back by himself? As people above said when he arrives back to the guild you need to talk to him again and then to the guildmaster about recommendation.

Don't know what gave you that idea. You're there to rescue him, not recruit him.

the wiki shows he can be your companion so that gave me the idea so when i can get him then?

Yes - as a TEMPORARY follower, while you escort him back to the Mages Guild.
