Nope you cannot store stuff randomly, only "safe storage" is in a home you own.

So no long time storage. But you can store things there for a short time. I do that to collect stuff I loot in dungeons so I can haul them off to the next vendor without having them lying on the floor (where they may get lost).
Your bought houses are the only place where it is safe to store items over long periods of time.
You don't want to use random chests for more than a day or two of gametime. I'm not sure if anyone has really done a study on how or when they reset. Even the guild storage where you are a member is not safe.
Loot everything, sell everything, make potions and sell them, until you have enough to buy your first house (which will probably always be Bravil at 5k.) EDIT: sorry, I meant Anvil.
Same as it was in original, 3 days to reset cell if it hasn't been visited, this is how you farm anything... glares at sweetcakes.... *mutters why only 12.... uses dupe glitch
