Best place to sell goods?
Should I be trying to sell specific goods to specific merchants for the best price or does it not really matter?

Nobody seems to have *actually* answered the question at hand, which is will you earn more money selling swords to a swordsmith, or mushrooms to a chef, etc.

The answer is no - shop specialization doesn't affect how much NPC's will pay.

The 3 factors at play when buying and selling are:
* Condition - lower item condition reduces value
* Shop Specialization - vendors will not buy items not related to their specialization
* Disposition (persuasion) - use the persuasion mini-game to get the vendors opinion of you as high as you can to get more money.

All of these factors can be mitigated by your Mercantile skill:
* 25 Mercantile skill, item condition no longer affects price.
* 50 Mercantile skill, vendors will buy anything from you, shop specialization no longer matters.
* 100 Mercantile, items are bought and sold at base value, so disposition no longer matters.

imperial city market district
I noticed that not all merchants buy everything. That used to be a thing in the original, until you had high mercantile skill. But I am not sure if it is still exactly the same or if it changed somewhat.
Rindir bought the jewelry from me, which his neighbour didn't. It seems that goods, which amerchant doesn't buy, don't even show up on the tradescreen.
Go to the imperial market district, sell items at the appropriate vendors to make the most gold, don't forget to haggle.

When you get better at mercantile it stop mattering and you can sell anything to anyone, so make friends with the woman in "a fighting chance" since she has the most money,

Yeah I'm there now, but that doesn't answer my question like should I for example sell armour to armourers and jewels to jewellers etc for best price or?

Yes.
To emphasise: "make friends" by maxing her opinion of you using the Persuade mini-game. Merchants will give you better prices if they like you.

the shop hope i was able to help :)
Technically yes, certain merchants will only buy certain goods. Depends on your Mercantile skill, once you reach the Journeyman rank (50/100) you can sell anything to anyone. Always use a charm spell before you start selling/buying items and never forget to haggle first.

I personally use Aurelinwae at the Mystical Emporium in the Imperial City Market District. 2000 base gold (3000 if you decide to invest and reach 100 Mercantile - which is quite easy since you keep selling whatever you loot from dead enemies)
Blacksmiths buy weapons and armor, alchemists buy potions and alchemy ingredients, bar keeps buy food and drink. All of these merchants can be found in the Imperial City, Bruma. And other cities/towns/settlements.
Raise disposition and haggle according to said disposition. How that ratio is balanced is kind of a toss up unfortunately. Outside of that, I don't think it matters who you sell to. Of course, assuming it is someone that wants the item type you are selling.
NPC guy strolling around in inn (unsure if its market place). He has 2000 gold which is nice. There is also one INN owner that buys stolen items, go sothest of imperial city (think road is there which you follow until you see the INN. Good luck.

If I sell a greater soul gem to Jensine, I get 152 gold with 100 disposition. If I sell it to Calindil at Mystic Emporium down from Jensine, I get 164 with 74 disposition. Shop type matters.
I always go for Rasheda in Chorrol.
Not just because she's one of the Redguard-girls I'd like to draw, but also because she starts with 1200 gold capacity. :awkward:
Also, a base ring of shadows gets me 600 from Rindir with 78 disposition, while only 581 from Jensine.
