Is it working out well? I tried doing this before and found the NPC directions and journal entries were not really descriptive enough to give me much help in organically finding things. What I have been doing myself is refusing to use fast travel and riding everywhere on horse. Its... okay, but I feel like it isn't really organic for travelling either.

If I really need to find something I can turn the compass back on for a moment. For 90% of the game its fine to not use it.

Ya I had the same experience. There were edge cases where I really needed the compass because instructions were too vague. I own it on PS5 so I cant mod it, but I will try following a bogus quest to remove my waypoint and try it out that way.
