Edit: Also, if you want to play something better than a dremora, do the Shivering Isles quests.
Why is that? Not every dremora is Loyal, the Dremora pirate Velehk Sain has been around since the Second Era and serves no master but himself.
Lore wise I can kind of see it, to a degree. You're a servant of Molag Bal who was sent to stop them. It's not like they particularly like each other. It's a stretch, but it's at least somewhat plausible.
As devils advocate, because a demora wouldn't be tossed into an imperial prison. The Emperor wouldn't trust you and neither would the blades. And as you said they're out for themselves, they wouldn't care about saving the world. But as I kind of said, being a servant of Molag Bal, being sent to stop them, then ignoring the intro maybe would work?
You could have been caught by a corrupt Imperial Guard outside Anvil after a shipwreck, in return for stashed away treasure, he lets you live, but imprisons you first before retrieving the treasure. Then perhaps he gets killed by your crew-mates that are guarding said treasure, or betrays and leaves you in the prison for years. Like the Blades said, that cell was supposed be off limits, and even if you're a dremora, the Emperor would still claim he saw you in his dreams, and he stops the blades for killing you.
Though you do bring up a point, where is Molag Bal during this? Doesn't he also want Nirn? Is Dagon stronger than him and he chooses to not interfere, or perhaps waiting for him to exhaust himself in the war,
Has Molag Bal fully recovered from the debacle of ESO by this time? I mean it's been a long time by moral standards, but not by a gods standards.
I would think 800 years would be more than long enough time to recover, but I'm no expert on Deadric Princes.
Do I have to remind you that this is Elder Scrolls we're talking about...? The games that have one of the biggest modding community...? Since when lore accurate prevented people from having Halo armor, Barrad-Dur, Thomas the Train replacing Dragons, Or my little Poney mounts...? It's about having fun in your own game, not trying to be lore accurate.
If I want to play Superman in Skyrim while fighting Thor, you better believe I'll do it if I freaking want to. The mistake would be to think I'd give a damn about what other people think about that XD. If he wants to play Dremora, let him do so, it used to be very popular mods in both Oblivion and Skyrim.
By the way, there are Dremora Polymorphs in ESO, as well as a Molag Bal one, just sayin' ...
Tell that to Velehk Sain, been in this plane since early Second Era, if not earlier.
Velehk Sain, Lyranth, Torvesard, Kixathi, and maaany more... But again, besides the point, who cares, if you wanna play a Dremora, just do it... I have Doctor Eggman and Spider-man as some of my ESO characters, and used to play the freaking Predator in Skyrim XD ! It's a video game, it's make believe fictitious virtual world, it's FUN.
