Can't leave the sewers!

The emperor died and I am given the key to the sewers
I trace my steps back and there is a gate , with a popup that states: "Press E to poen gate"

But.. the gates never opens! :O I'm stuck!
Even save, quit and restart game didn't fix it!

If it could explain, I made a custom class "Spellsword" (oops that class already existed.. but game was fine) and choose the atronach sign (risky with mana here ^_^)

Also playing the game with the XBox gamepass (i.e. not steam)

There is no backtrack, you need to go forward, through where the assassin that killed the emperor came from. Then you will use the key on an exit leading down.
