Why are Oblivion Gates showing up before Kvatch?
As the title said i'm just wandering the country side doing side quests before even having gone to see Jauffre and I keep running into open oblivion gates. Is it a bug? Is it a new feature? I don't know, I'm afraid to close one before Kvatch lest I break the main quest.

I suspect bug, but maybe they changed it that those can open earlier...

If memory serves me right it was a rare bug in the OG if you were a high level before doing Kvatch but usually caused by mods though. I imagine when they tooled everything they broke something though.

First time player here, so you're saying that gate I passed WASN'T supposed to be open...

Well glad I chose to ignore it.
I wouldn't close any before Kvatch, lore wise I guess it would make sense since the invasion is underway, gameplay wise it doesn't make sense and could potentially cause bugs.
From what I recall, there were a few scripted oblivion gates. My mind wants to believe that those were there before opening the first one? Its super foggy, but could they be scripted gates?

No, I've seen clips of the bug. I've seen people have them right outside of the sewer once they start the game. That was usually caused by conflicts with mods though back in the day if memory serves me right.

No Oblivion gates should ever be open before you rescue Martin.
I'd have to lean towards bug. I've been avoiding the general area of kvatch like a plague to avoid advancing the main quest/gates and havent had an issue with it so far. Mine at least seems to be working as expected, in that way at least (had a few other interesting issues).

If memory serves right, and it has been years, and this is a remaster (but mostly a new paint job, not much has actually changed), but i recall there was a random unmarked house near the chapel of knights of the nine that could get "cut in half" by an oblivion gate, making it inaccessible, despite a skill book being present in the upstairs area. That was the only thing i had to make sure i got before gates started opening. Might be able to progress otherwise normally despite the bug as a result.
Ya I definitely seen or heard about this before though, so its not a new bug lol.

But consensus here is that is indeed a bug?

Yes, well maybe it depends where you're at in the main quest

Ya, it sounds like it. And its been around in some way shape or form since the beginning. I distintly recall seeing a gate before the MSQ opened them. I thought it was scripted but maybe not. This was back when it first released too. My brain very foggily recalls it having something to do with a daedric quest.

There seems to be a few broken flag triggers or something. I also have the Oblivion gate one. There's also some NPCs that act like you're in a faction when you're not.
