keep on the main quest a bit more, i say until kvatch, then you can join the mage/warrior guild and do their quests, explore in city and do some side quest, before pick up the main again.

I did 7 hours of exploring before findinf the dude.. worth it. Can't wait to be a Chad in the Fighter's Guild

What I always did in Skyrim: Pick up everything you can hold that has value and sell at the closest settlement before I continue to my next quest. In my opinion, check out the main city especially the market sector and resupply/dump your unused crap.
