Obtaining new spells automatically?
Hi, I have started as a Breton Mage with Mage birthstone and shortly after the tutorial I notice that more and more spells are available.

At the beginning I only had that fire blast. „Show the way“ and a healing spell. Suddenly, I also have detect life and protect.

Do I get spells by leveling up certain skills? I thought that I need to buy them somewhere.

Normally no. You have to learn them.
Make sure that the "extra" spell you have are not the 'use once a day' ones. If yes, then those are racial abilities.
Those usually pop up only after you leave the sewers. Once used you have to sleep to use them again.

think your starting spells depends on which major schools you opt in your build.
You gain a couple new spells based on skill selections.

I *think* everyone gets Clairvoyance and the small heal. Because those are used in tutorial.

When you choose magical skills at the start of the game, it does give you some extra ones, Cold Touch, Summon Skeleton etc. However, this is probably a one-time thing. Since you have no money to actually buy spells after the tutorial they give you some starter spells, you do not normally get spells by leveling, you buy or make your own.
you have not more magic point when choose bretonian ?

That would make sense! I was wondering the same thing as OP, I just didnt question it too hard.
Thanks guys for the answers, I still don’t really get how they appeared without any notification. Summon skeleton, health absorption, electric touch, could touch are quite useful.

Detect life shows the life signals very minimalist. Will higher forms of this spell show life signals more apparent?
There is also a “starlight” spell. I thought it will illuminate my surroundings when in dark areas but do not really notice any difference. Am I doing something wrong?

I am playing on steam deck with automatic lowest setting. This might impact some visual effects of spells that make them work less good?

now Im pretty sure during the tutorial you have some basic spells like fireball, does not matter what skills you pick at that point. Once you leave the dungeon the spells you get depend on what major skills you choose i.e. Conjuration gives "summon skeletion". Startlight seems to be working with a couple of seconds delay and is very weak.

From what I've seen Starlight is bugged in first person, but if you switch to 3rd it starts working normally. I got Gloves with it and they wouldn't work. When I switched to 3rd to see if it really didn't work it started.

Once you enter your class, and choose the schools of magic, some "basic" spells for each school of magic in your build, is added to your spellbook.
You still have to buy or craft advanced spells.
you get more spells after you exit the sewers or once you have finalized your major skills.

if your major skills are spells (alteration, illusion, restoration, mysticism etc) and the numbers are over 25, you get more spells at the start of your adventure.

after that, you need to read spell books, or buy from NPCs.

Idk if this helps, but the starlight and similar light spells seem not to affect me when in first person mode. If i switch to third person mode and swap back to first, i see the light effects.
