How do I lockpick?

Sorry to interrupt the cry baby fest going on in the forums but can someone tell me how to lock pick. When am I supposed to attempt each pin. My small brain just cant seem to put it together.

Move pin up
Lock just before it touches the top.
Rinse repeat.

Move the pin up and watch the speed that it goes up. If it goes fast don't do anything and let it fall. If it goes up slowly then click when it's at the top.

Spam auto attempt until it opens.

There are plenty of ancient tutorials on Youtube that cover this. The mechanic didn't change as far as I know.
