As far as I understand, they made it so that without taking the quest from Clavicus, you just can't kill her at all. And Clavicus only gives the quest at who knows what level, because I don't remember anymore.
I ran out of arrows (200+) in this attempt, finished her off with spells that had a bonus due to the character's race. But it's disappointing. I spent about 30-40 minutes on this (with the run to the guard), and it's not even about the sword or armor, it was just a tradition to kill Umbra right at the start of the game. I didn't even know that she was a quest character, and that you can talk to her when I played in 2006 for the first time :) I just killed her by accident :))) And it was really fun and cool, because as a reward for a mega-hard fight (for first time it really was) at this level you get a decent reward, even if I don't need it now. Why this option was removed, I don't understand. Those who wanted to complete the quest as expected, could still do it if they wanted.
By the way, the game also crashed, but the saves remained intact. Thanks for the warning.
Bethesda, give me the opportunity to kill Umbra without a quest back!
