Does anyone know if your original save game can work on the new one?

Probably not
+1 If anyone can confirm, I'd like to know.
Doesn't look like it, ... the save game files use a different extension now:

I'm 45 hrs in with the original game. Even tho the remaster looks amazing I don't want to lose my progress bc I've grown attached to my character. I'll have to wait until my next play through in a couple of years

Yep, I'm in the same boat. Had 100's of hours in the original so if I could port the old saves over it would be an insta buy. Wishlisted for now as the remake does look fantastic.

Also, Bethesda confirmed old saves won't work:

Aw, I guess I don't get all my glitch-made OP enchanted items from the fortify restoration glitch that I made 15 years ago, or my perfectly organized house in Bruma. You know how long it took me to organize my book collection onto the shelves, painstakingly, one book at a time? Well I'm not doing that again.

I made a new character, a Kajiit with a big white cat muzzle mouth, jutting jaw looking like the Lion King. He doesn't read books or pick up paint brushes. He just kills deer and wolves and roams the lands. Maybe one day he'll randomly make it to Kvatch
It doesn't matter what extension the Remastered uses, it only matters what the internal structure of the file is.
I've heard from multiple modders that the backend of the game is like 99% same as the original (some mods for the original are even working in Remastered without porting), so, while I don't want to give anyone false hopes, it's imho only a matter of time before someone puts together a save game converter.
Not likely. The remaster was built on the Oblivion engine, yes. But the UE upgrade probably won't be compatible with older pre-UE saves. It isn't just graphics they've upgraded. There are new voiceovers, extended terrain features, new facial expressions and character design elements...I just don't see it working.
