spell level

I'm trying to use a spell but it tells me I'm too low....how can you tell what level the spells are so I know what to level it to?

Well they are either novice(default), apprentice(25), adept(50) ,expert(75), or master(100).
So you have to get to one of those break points to use better spells.

I assumed it was a novice spell, it's a cheap soul trap spell, but as i said, I can't really tell what the actual level might be

If memory serves, the lowest soul trap spell is journeyman level. I think the spell making altar is the only in-game way to see what rank is required to cast it.
