Poisoned Gas?
I am working my way through the fighter's guild quest and was in a room that had the vented gas. In the past once I ran out of the area the effect went away allowing me to heal the damage. In this case it continued to effect both the NPC with me and myself. I tried using both cure poison potions and the spell neither worked. I just continued to take damage until I ran out of magic and potions to heal myself with. A look at the current effects in the magic tab showed nothing, I also saw no icon down below the two icons that show what you have equipped. Is there a solution to this? It was only gold in the containers so I just didn't go into the room but very annoying to not be able negate the damage over time effect that was occurring. I also couldn't find a switch to turn the gas vents off.

It’s a bug. Just reload a previous save and try again.
you must initiate a dialogue with Orwyn, the one following you, but some place inside the ruins. You don't have to deal with the gas. You then must follow him (without fast travel) to another place to continue the quest

So what was happening was I would run back to the room with the spike trap to try to talk to him but we where both taking damage from the room with the vents. So either he would lose consciousness or I would die while in the middle of the dialogue. I went back to a save and simply didn't go into the room so I could talk to him which moved the quest forward. A very annoying bug to deal with.
This is an annoying big that has been in the game since the original. Kind of amazing they didn't fix it.

Quicksave/quickload fixes this bug, usually.

Saw a guy that started drowning on land also. Guessing gas and water have some of the same issues.
Yeah that quest sucks. you don't need to go into that room, just to the back of the room with the spike traps... but make sure you don't talk to him in the middle of that room either or he will walk into the spike trap and just be permanently stuck there because he stops moving.

Play Argonian ;P neither issue will ever effect you. (and you don't have to worry about pesky poisons damaging your stats and forcing you to reload because of the permanent damaged stat bug)

Is this southwest of the main city where the soldier says, "Leave while you still can?" You have to keep moving.

No it is in the first Aleyid ruin you go to looking for the guy the Blackwood company was suppose to kill. But I think the bug can happen in any room that has the vented gas in them. It might even happen when you are swimming, I saw something about that but it seemed to be about slaughterfish hitting you that you can't see to fight so they just bite you until you die.
Playing this game just makes me want to play Skyrim and the Level scaling is so ♥♥♥♥ among a 100 other issues. I'm going to play Skyrim or even Enderal maybe something else for a while because the tedium of this game is making me enjoy it less and less and frustrating me.
