Mage Guild robes

Eventually, I will get my enchantment level up and enchant regular street clothing. Until then, I'm making use of what i get from Mage Guild. I just did the quest stage where I can make use of the Arch-Mage's robe. And I was surprised; this robe seems like a huge downgrade from the Robe of the Conjurer that is rewarded for one of the preceding quests. Consider this a question of curiosity on my part: Am I missing something here? Is there something about the Arch-Mages robe that it is better than it appears?
