The developers slowed down the attack speed massively with the remaster but never upped the damage, as a result they barely do more then 1 handed weapons.
They also for some reason reduced the reach they have.
Given the shield can actually reduce damage you are much better off using 1h+ shield or just hitting things with ranged attacks.
This is especially true since instead of making AI competent they just decided to bloat health pools.
I don't limit myself to one or two things, I use a bow all the time, but not for damage, as a poison delivery system. There's nothing that does more damage than a bow with +100 weakness to poison with a poison that does 5 fire 5 shock and 5 damage health for 26 seconds. 30dps for 10 seconds kills everything that is not immune to poison. I think my marksman might be 44. I also have Mehrune's dagger, which is pretty meh for my taste, and a short sword for shock and soul trapping.
That's if I'm not conjuring daedra or using illusion for controls. I even wear armor sometimes.
I keep chameleon around 70 in a big room before the fight, armor rating 85 casting/potion shield, 500 mana and 150 hit points.
I'm going to make some hard hitting charm and fortify personality potions to see if I can turn some enemies neutral just for the lulz.
Some games try to counter this strength by limiting the amount of ammunition your character can carry, but not so in this game.
Add some poison and enchantments and you become what amounts to an undetected nuclear sub launching ICBMs at unsuspecting enemies.
The way that you can stack multiple types of damage in 1 hit is awesome.
I use a daedric bow enchanted with absorb health and damage health. I will use shock damage arrows and then apply whatever poison is best needed for the situation. Can clear entire oblivion gates without ever being touched by a enemy. I will also use an enchanted dagger with soul trap just for filling up my gems. Easy peasy!!!
