Devs of dungeons2, you can make an easy to use editor for this game to make maps for skirmishes, multiplayer and even single-player campaigns. The content will be never ending and the community relations will never have been better. Please say you'll at least consider it.
Here's why I say this. I was a high level backer for War for the Overworld. And everyone was demanding a map editor early on. They spent hundreds of hours and nearly all the kickstarter money writing this Unity map editor, and finally they realized it was more trouble than it was worth and were forced to abandon it.
I'd hate for you to spend a great deal of time and money on a map editor, and then we end up losing out on more excellent NEW content from you guys.
I've waited so long for a DK successor, I really want this game to do awesome. Do what you guys think is best, but keep the fantastic content coming!
I totally hear you. Aside from Unity issues (and I no longer know they are preferable now to Unreal's new plan), consider this. Yes, make this game all you can make it. But instead of moving on to a second game when you're done, treat making that editor like the next game. It really will pay off in the end. Again, consider the amount of content that will keep your game alive and keep fans wanting your next version. It is a longer view, but in the end it pays off.
Yeah, I understand where you guys are coming from. I am also impressed how much you were able to do with the Unity Engine for this game, as it is.
I just think a map editor would be a wonderful addition someday (if at all posible).
But, thank you for taking the time to respond,
And best of luck with all future updates! :D
creating a map editor is a real PAIN, as you pointed out yourself. even for simple games, much harder for something as complex and big as this.
it takes a very high amount of resources and rarely ever is worth nearly that amount for what the players gets out of it.
while a editor would be cool, the vast majority of people would never use it or get any joy from it.
the time spend on it you could basically make a whole new campaign which would provide a lot more playtime for a much larger amount of fans ^^
i personally believe your resources should be focused on the expansions, new campaign, bettering ai, etc. stuff ^^
considering how few people actually use map editors in most rts's and how few actually play maps made with them, the time used on them is not worth it at all.
only the biggest company, aka blizzard actually have had high success with it and that is because it wasn't just a map editor but basically the full dev too, which they made as an editor, and even they only had major success with it in their later products.
if dungeons 3 turns out to be a huge success that improve on dungeon 2 idea's then i would say it could be worth checking if the resources should be spend on an editor for that. but for now i would say it is no where near worth it and it's a huge risk to take which could hurt the production and chance of a dungeon 3 :)
that's how i see it at least
