Constantly crashing at first load screen

Whenever I load the game it gets to the first loading screen (with a picture of the village after all the splash and titles) and hangs there until I close the game. Every so often STEAM will download a file whenever it happens and a few times (like twice so far) it makes a bunch of beeping error noises but then the game starts.

Any idea what's going on?

Can you try reverifying your steam cache?

Also try disabling the Steam overlay

I had exactly the same problem; I checked the game cache and there were about 93k of files missing. The game is now working great! Thanx.
