Game constantly crashing upon startup, darkest.exe fails

I had previously played this game on my older laptop without any problems (windows 7 for reference). After switching to my new laptop which has better specs in all regards (running on windows 10) the game no longer works. It constantly gives me a darkest.exe fails error and the game crashes. If you could provide any support on how to fix this issue that would be much appreciated.

EDIT: I just found out the S.M.A.R.T. on my disk is not okay :( so with all probability it's a physical disk error.

I can't play anymore! Everything was fine (last I played was a couple of weeks ago, no system upgrades in between) and today I upgraded to the last patch and played.

Now it sits on a black screen with the brown game mouse cursor, then it goes white and windows wants to kill it. I tried a couple of times and then rebooted, now I can't even use CTRL+ALT+CANC because nothing happens. After waiting 4-5 minutes it finally started. I started my savegame and it just kept on loading it with the flame animation going. After a while I invoked the steam overlay and killed the game, and everything crashed again and I couldn't do anything for 2-3 minutes.

I'm on a desktop PC, I did nothing between the last time it worked and today, except installing the new update.

The game crashes with steam exe, but if I use the non steam exe (<drive>:\<Steam_location>\<steamapps_location>\common\DarkestDungeon\_windowsnosteam\Darkest.exe) and put it on windows xp sp2 compat it works... I think maybe forcing dx 9 works too? Maybe this thing do not play well with NV's newer DX modes.

I think all of the crashes here (short of the disk one) are from NV cards, maybe something is wrong with NV drivers / card. Talk with the gameworks guys maybe.
