Just got owned in the 1st Dungeon by a shambler
Lol, that is just not fair. Devs you are a bunch of crazy sadists. ;)

I haven't seen a shambles altar in a while... Wish I could bump in to another one (I have only done it once so far).

I did not have a problem killing him the only time that I did it. Had a solid group going though and it was just the beginner shambler. Can't wait to try him in Vet+ (no champions yet for me).

When i did it i had a realitivly low level group and due to his stress damage lost 2 or 3 of them to heart attacks, so yeah.

You don't need a altar. Just do a 0 torch run and he may appear

Didn't know he could just show up! Yikes! I run around with no lights on quite a bit although I do allow the torch light to fade on its own and just do not light any more up. What are the chances for him to show up at 0 light?

Yep, happened to me as well. Don't fight shamblers until your dudes are capped out for that difficulty level.

my first shambler wasn't hard, it did not summon those little things. they not weak, if you let them attack

at resolve 0 you're bound to fail, but keep lighting those altars, the trinkets - especially the ancestor's map - will ease the rest of the game for you! Definitely worth the dark depths battle with cthulu.

My first (and only) party wipe was against a shambler. Ignorant as I was, I put a torch into it because it felt like a good idea at the time and I was veteran already in this game.

Result: three heart attacks and a failed death door check.

Remind yourself that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer.

Don't really know. He can appear instead of one of the monster packs in the hallways. But if you retreat from the fight he's likely to not appear when you start the fight again

To be fair the altar does warn you. :) if the devs wanted to be sadists it could have been a sphere of annihilation in there.

Tbh, it sounds more like the torch went out and Shambler surprised him in a hallway

No, i don't know.
Play in 'Black as pitch' run, and the chance of his spawn greatly increase.
Once you know, how to kill him, you can farm one of the best trinkets actually easily.
