They just need a new ability that works when they're at the front and they can't move further back.
Fungal Artillery do the same thing with Escape Spores.
A lot of the game monsters have position specific attacks, much like your own characters.
If you are not able to, you pay severe consequences and considering RNG sometimes, I'm perfectly fine with an easy kill every now and then.
Ghoul is good sample of big monster. He has large HP, but you still whant neutralise it first if not with damage but with stun at least.
Obviously it shouldn't be using it when it's alone or already in the back though.
This is old but he has the default AI script meaning he uses the move listed first 75% of the time (in this case, it depends on the number of moves), and the other one 25%. Trot retreat is listed first and it has no damage and almost no accuracy. (the AoE charge is the first of the back row moves).
You can fix this by making Crunching Backhand monsters_size_skill min 0 max 2, then he only uses it when alone (use specific_skill paramater for his other 3 moves). Or just make trot retreat have the same stats as Crunching Backhand, whichever.
