Assuming you mean a heavy melee hitter (with no taunt, agro, or any way to control which character is attacked, it's the only definition that could work), Crusader.

Holy Lance adds the versatility that separates him from the Leper.

Probably Crusader, just for Holy Lance. "Tanking" isn't really a thing in this game, so what I want out of a front-liner is the ability to get back to the damned front line.

Crusader are OP right now. Leper has a way more interesting character design though

Crusader, especially since he's got multiple trinkets that give +5% prot each. The only enemy I've ever seen deal more than like 10 damage to him on a normal hit is the Swine God.

i don't like leper because he is terribly inaccurate unless you find some good +acc gear. I use hellion the most by far. crusader is ok but he also misses too much for my taste

My current Lvl6-party got too a crusader at the front. With equip and good quirks close to 90hp makes him excellent for my first line ... things like crit-pointblank-shots and other evil stuff o.o
But besides that - yeah, "tank"ing" is only particulary possible since the AI doesnt focus intelligent. Lucky us.

The leper would be better if he just had one attack that could hit anything but the first two enemies or used from anything but the first to ranks.

Thematically, I like Leper most. Utilitywise, I like Hellion a lot because of the targeting scope of all her abilities. Also, didn't know she was considered a 'tanky' type until I saw this thread, although I did always use her as a frontliner because mine has Hatred of Unholy and I like to use Iron Swan to swat out those damned Bone Courtiers.

Usually I'm able to kill one of the other units with my other characters and then hit the courtier with if it bleeds. I never get much use out of iron swan.

I have some pretty decent speed quirks with my Hellion so she usually goes first and with the +acc against undead, she's pretty spot on with eliminating back row threats in combat. That's just me having a pretty lucky set up with her though.

Still, it does the same damage but without the bleed chance, and the 4th enemy is rarely that much more damage than the 3rd, so even if she goes first I usually kill the third enemy so I can target the 4th with if it bleeds next time.

Since you can't direct opponents' attacks, "Tanking" is not a thing in this game.

And I'm very glad it isn't.

no, but some mobs are kind of restricted to attack the front row, so there is somewhat "tanking". and you rather focus healing on the front row over the back.

Hellion because of her bleed attack. Crusader/Leper can't cause bleed. Plus it reaches the 3rd position without being as awkward to use as Holy Lance.
